“Graveyard” has the connotations of death, suggesting that unlike Mead the rest of society’s lives have no value. This is shown as it says: “and on his way he would see the cottages and homes with their dark windows, and it was not unequal to walking through a graveyard.” This creates a contrast between Mead’s positive experiences and the damaging dependence on technology shown by the rest of society. This suggests to the reader that if we rely on technology we shall miss out on this atmosphere.īradbury creates a contrast between Mead and society through his use of imagery. Both techniques are effective in showing that technology limits freedom as by creating this relaxing mood. “Cigar” helps create this as it has the connotations of a relaxed mood. This is clear as it says: “sending patterns of frosty air before him like the smoke of a cigar.” This is effective as it gives off a romantic atmosphere. The author also uses similes to create a tranquil atmosphere to describe Meads walk. This is effective as the “F” sound has a soft tone which has the connotations of peace. This is clear as it says: “Faintest glimmers of firefly light.” Bradbury’s use of alliteration of the “F” sound creates a peaceful atmosphere. The author creates a feeling of peace and tranquillity in the first half of the story to show Mead’s enjoyment of walking and how he is rejecting technology. Bradbury explores the theme of how technology limits freedom through his use of word choice, mood, imagery and personification. The story used is to warn the reader of the dangers of our reliance on technology showing us what may lie ahead if mankind relinquishes its humanity progress.
Mood of the pedestrian tv#
He is, however taken away to a mental institution as the robotic police car does not recognize the basic human behaviour of walking as everyone else in the stories society watches TV in the evenings. The police car questions him on what he is doing even though Mead has done nothing wrong. One evening, Mead is out for his usual walk, but is stopped by a police car.

Leonard Mead, the protagonist in a television centred world in A.D 2052, is different from everyone else in the stories society as instead of relying on technology to entertain him, Mead finds his entertainment walking. “The Pedestrian” by Ray Bradbury, is a science fiction story set in a future dystopia.
